Courtney Elwell
Candidate for Woodburn School Board, Position 3
I am a parent who has had four children attend Woodburn public schools. My concern with their education is what led me to become actively involved in our district for years, including regularly attending board meetings to observe and monitor proceedings. My deep investment in our schools led me to step up to serve on the school board through a recent appointment.
Alongside raising my family, I’ve spent my time helping others, including previously as a Housing Case Manager for the City of Salem. I now serve as President of the Woodburn Bulldog Foundation, Vice President of Woodburn Proud, and I stay active in our schools and community. I’m running because I believe every kid in Woodburn deserves a safe, strong education—and I’m not afraid to roll up my sleeves to make that happen.
Courtney Elwell:
A Parent’s Voice for Students and Families
Reading Levels: At just 17% reading proficiency, we must urgently improve reading outcomes and address other areas of low proficiency.
Hands-on Learning: We need to expand opportunities for learning beyond textbooks to ensure a well-rounded education.
Safety: The safety of students and teachers is essential. Let’s strengthen partnerships that promote physical and mental health supports for all students.
Graduation Rates: Our graduates need to be ready for their next chapter. Our aim should be to raise graduation rates without compromising standards.
Empowering Teachers: Teachers and classified staff are critical to student success. We must listen and provide the support they need, along with providing clear expectations and accountability.
Board Transparency: Transparency is essential to build trust and confidence. Let’s openly communicate and collaborate with families, educators, and the community.
